Charlotte High School was originally built in 1926 for about 800 students. For many years, CHS was the only high school in Charlotte County. The school drew students from Englewood and Boca Grande through to eastern Charlotte County. Today, some 1,960 students roam the halls of Charlotte County's oldest high school eager to continue in the tradition of being Charlotte County's "first and finest". Tradition is meaningful at CHS, a blue and gold banner flies from the three story high school  which reads, "The Tradition Continues."

Recently, an article was written in the Herald Tribune about the history of Charlotte High School. Check out the article by following this link.

Dale Russell, class of 1972, is currently one of three Dean of Students. Wendy Schmidt, the class of 1972 Junior Class sponsor is currently the Director of Guidance. Mr. Sansone, 1972 Senior Class sponsor is teaching.

The old cafeteria where we ate lunch daily (as CHS was a closed campus for lunch) was razed a couple years ago and the spot stood empty for awhile. Now there is a brand-new TWO story classroom building in its place with CHS's FIRST real elevator. This elevator is only used for handicapped students however, it's not accessible to the whole student body.

Charlotte High School Circa 2002The new cafeteria serves 600 students at once in a food court setting offering subs, pizza, salads, hamburgers, chicken nuggets, etc. The old softball field had to go to build the cafeteria. Now there is a new softball field to the right of Tarpon Stadium...right in front of the softball field there are brand new lighted tennis courts which was dedicated in December, 2001.

Ground was just broken in January, 2002, for a new performing arts center on campus out in front of the agriculture area. It will take approximately 1 1/2 years to complete the center. It will be used by community groups as well as the high school.  The old gym where we used to hold basketball games is currently condemned and is not used.

Check out the official Charlotte High School Web Page. Something fun to also check out is the web page for Sallie Jones Elementary School.
