School officials like CHS ball fields
New
sports fields are on the way for Charlotte High School.
School officials and architects unveiled a conceptual drawing
showing five revitalized athletic fields during a School Board
workshop Tuesday.
The plans would entail moving and raising current fields to
prevent flooding, according to Roseann Samson, assistant
superintendent for support services.
A planning committee composed of school officials and community
members helped create the design for the sports fields.
Reconstruction of the CHS campus -- which was destroyed in
Hurricane Charley -- will be in two phases: academic buildings
and sports fields.
School officials were pleased with the plans.
"I guess it shows what you can do with a blank canvas," said
School Board Chairwoman Sue Sifrit.
The lion's share of the estimated $40 million rebuilding project
will be paid with FEMA and insurance funds, according to Samson.
The fields, in addition to being relocated, will also be raised
to alleviate flooding problems.
Officials are poised to rework the design if a plan for a
five-acre piece of land the district is trying to acquire falls
through. School officials are trying to obtain the Heritage
Villas property on Henry Street.
Though the owners are willing to sell, the Food and Drug
Administration, which as a federal agency has precedence over
the School Board, is not willing to relinquish its rights to the
property.
District officials might have to pursue eminent domain
proceedings to secure the land.
Construction will not affect football season, Samson said. Work
will begin on the soccer field during football season. Plans are
under way to find a place for the soccer players during
construction.
During the day, new scoreboards will be placed in the current
football field for use in the 2006-07 school year. The
scoreboards were donated last year by Sportable Scoreboards of
Murray, Ky.
In other construction news: Ninth-graders will be housed in the
CHS two-story building during the 2006-07 school year.
